Health Equity and Violence Prevention
Violence has multiple dimensions. Its effects on health are measurable and distinct, whether related to the victims, perpetrators, or the bystanders. Violence can occur at any time or place and can occur in many forms, such as physical, psychological, or community-wide violence. Violence most often leads to physical and psychological harm and mental distress as an immediate result but can also have long-lasting and even generational effects. Certain types of violence occur in a racial context, resulting from bias and discrimination.
Here we focus on violence toward Indigenous people. The Missing or Murdered Indigenous People crisis includes how governments and communities are working to address this serious challenge.
