The Black Mamas Matter Alliance
In June 2015, the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York partnered with SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective to host a convening titled “Black Mamas Matter Project.” Raising the alarm about the rising maternal mortality rates and its impact on Black women, researchers, service providers, policy experts, and community organizers gathered at the SisterSong Mother House in Atlanta to identify innovative strategies for addressing maternal and reproductive health inequities. Since then, the project has evolved into the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), which, among other accomplishments, has advanced a global rights-based policy agenda to improve maternal health of Black women across the diaspora.
Black Maternal Health Week
Since its founding in Atlanta in 2015, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) has become a leading national voice on behalf of Black women. Black women-led, BMMA works on behalf of Black mamas to advocate, drive research, and build and shift culture for Black maternal health, rights, and justice.
From April 11-17, Black Mamas Matter organizes the annual Black Maternal Health Week, which has taken on national and global significance. The annual campaign serves to amplify the voices of Black mamas, to center the values and traditions of the reproductive justice movement, and to enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.
