The Lived Experience as Data

Lived experience is not just a powerful, but an essential source of data. The oral and written stories of people experiencing illness, disability, or disease, adds a valuable and authentic view on what it is like to live with specific health conditions that CDC, public health agencies, non-profit organizations, and health activists are interested in better understanding. These stories capture nuances that go unseen in the “numbers,” allowing a more complete view of public health issues. The inclusion of lived experience in research and data analysis grounds policies and programs in the real-world and empowers community members by ensuring that they are heard. Their voices allow for more sincere, empathetic, and inclusive ways to develop policies and programs that support those most impacted.
