Just outside Birmingham in Homewood, Alabama is the Magic City Acceptance Academy (MCAA)—the first U.S. public charter school for LGBTQ+ self-identifying students. A hard-won victory for Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO), under whose umbrella the school operates, MCAA opened in August 2021 to serve queer students in grades six through twelve. By creating a LGBTQ+ affirming learning environment, MCAA enrolled more than 240 students who had dropped out, were not thriving in traditional schools, or were enrolled in homeschool programs.

To integrate its mission with design, BAO engaged with CCR Architecture & Interiors in Birmingham to adapt a vacant suburban office building into its thriving campus where gay, straight, nonbinary, cisgender or transgender students are welcomed. The architects used bright affirming colors and open architecture to achieve this goal.

Counseling and Guidance at MCAA

Providing a safe and affirming environment for its students drove the adaptation and design of the MCAA building. LGBTQ+ students are more likely to have faced bullying and harassment, leading to poor grades, higher dropout rates, and homelessness. Consequently, MCAA’s counseling program is a proactive system designed to anticipate and facilitate the academic, career and personal/social/emotional development of students.

The Wellness Suite at MCAA offers students and parents a diverse group of mental health programs to help navigate school and future planning. Counselors meet with students individually or in small groups to address social, emotional, or academic needs. Classroom lessons help students acquire interpersonal/social skills, career awareness/exploration and study/organizational skills. In addition, counselors are available to conference with parents, both individually and with teachers.
