Spotlight: Inequities, Stigma and Influenza

Stigma is discrimination against a person, community, or nation. Stigma can prevent individuals and communities receiving quality care, lead to groups being marginalized within society, and distort public perceptions of the disease. The history of influenza pandemics and outbreaks reflect inequity and stigma in the past and their continued impact upon the present.

This track explores health inequities within and between nations, even during periods of social activism, as well how stigma can be expressed through language, imagery, and treatment of people during pandemics.
