Onkwe community displaying traditional varieties of corn, squash, and beans in the Haudenosaunee territory
Title
Onkwe community displaying traditional varieties of corn, squash, and beans in the Haudenosaunee territory
Description
Across the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) region in upstate New York and southern Ontario are six nations where communities and activists are cultivating and preserving traditional food systems. Here in the Onkwe community, a member of the Onondaga Nation, traditional corn, as well as squash and beans, is cultivated. The corn is braided so it can be dried and then ground into flour or boiled for traditional dishes.
